We’re delighted to announce the launch of our newest lighting collections for the virtual edition of Decorex International 2020, Europe’s leading event for interior design professionals. The virtual format kicks off tomorrow and runs until 19th November. Across the three days, we will exhibit GLOW, AYA and two new colourways of NEA WALL MARBLE.
All three new collections embody our innovative, low-waste approach to sustainable materials. Explore our latest pieces below.
GLOW distills the grandeur of Inner Glow, our sculptural lighting collaboration with French designer Sophie Dries, into a functional and compact form that suits the modern home. The collection fuses blown glass, raw organic paper, and brass to strike an imperfect balance between organic and geometric, natural and artificial. It also captures the essence of Kaia, bringing together the finest artisans, designers and independent suppliers from European countries who each champion environmentally conscious design and the cyclical use of natural materials.
Organic papier-mâché was sourced from Paper Factor, an atelier based in Puglia with a rich history of repairing church statues with the ancient material and technique. Dries’ choice of paper is an evolution of the papier-mâché process and has a raw, textural quality that resembles stone. Glass is custom-made for Kaia at an artisanal glassmaker in Germany’s Bavarian forest with more than 400 years of experience creating one-of-a-kind pieces. Layered onto these mouth-blown glass eggs, the paper appears to ‘grow’ and take on a life of its own.
The clean lines and geometric decoration of Viennese Secessionist architecture were the inspiration behind the chandelier, which sits polished and rounded Kaia glass in subtle contrast to raw and delicately etched papier-mâché. In contrasting sharp geometricity with the raw and organic, Dries sought to figuratively reflect the complexities of humans’ relationship with the environment, and suggest the possibility of harmonious coexistence.
Pushing the boundaries of what is possible with glass, AYA wall lights are created by using the residue of mouth-blown glass and manipulating it in elaborate ways to give the glass its rich jewel-like tone. This is a lighting object that embodies 450 years of traditional glass manufacturing and frames it in solid brass.
The AYA collection comprises three distinct colourways, which can sit individually or come together to create a refined statement. Each colourway is formed of natural tones that reflect and refract the light to give a sense of depth and richness. Tones include the mesmeric green Moss, minimalist white Shell, and the burnt orange boldness of Rust.
At Kaia, our philosophy revolves around hand-picking artisans and suppliers from across Europe whose ethos matches our own. We champion European creativity and have spent years forging relationships with small, family-run businesses who take a low or zero-waste approach to their manufacturing processes. Our finished lighting products form the antithesis to mass-production, where every aspect is entirely bespoke and hand-made in limited quantities using often centuries-old techniques. Nea Wall Marble – New Additions
Designed in collaboration with Banda Property, the NEA WALL MARBLE light mounts Kaia’s classic LED-dimmable NEA WALL light on a block of boldly veined marble with a waxed brass backplate. At Decorex, Kaia will introduce black and burgundy marble, expanding the collection to comprise four iterations of the minimalist wall light which currently includes white and dark green marble blocks.
As a brand, our origin is in our metalwork, but we’ve expanded our finishes and have started to introduce new and innovative materials. Sophie Dries’ GLOW is, in fact, the first lighting sculpture of its kind to merge organic raw paper with mouth-blown glass, pushing the boundaries of luxury lighting design in a way that centres on sustainability and the importance of independent craftsmanship.
We’re delighted to be returning to Decorex International 2020 to showcase the limitless possibilities of eco-conscious design that champions traditional European makers. For more information about our new collections contact our sales team on firstname.lastname@example.org.
